13 Star Square Formation Flag

Guckenberger Farm, Racine County,

W I12” x  28 1/4”

This square formation flag was probably much more familiar to colonists than the "Betsy Ross" flag of a starry circle. The square formation flag is depicted over George Washington's tent in John Trumball's paintings of the British surrender at Saratoga (1778) and Yorktown (1781). It was also flown by men-of-war ships and is depicted in paintings of George Washington's barge in New York Harbor on his Inauguration Day, April 30, 1789.
